(5/10)Atmosphere

Romanza is on the corner of a busy intersection, however its position on the hill gives it a decent view and not one of traffic. Inside, full glass windows, high ceilings, an exposed kitchen and dark furnishings give it a very nice look, though the openness gives it a bit of a cafeteria feel as it is pretty much one big room.

It is a family restaurant so one would expect noise, but even with less than a dozen occupied tables and probably about 25% capacity, it was quite noisy.

(3/10)Food

The menu was varied and very appetising, and the wine list featured a few nice wines. It's not BYO - but no one told the wait staff that, as when we enquired before arriving we were told after a muffled conversation that we could indeed bring our own wine and there was no corkage - that should have probably set off some alarm bells, but we happily picked up a bottle on the way, only to have to place it under the table on arrival, with some doubtful looks from the wait staff as they explained that no one would have told us it was BYO as they have never been BYO.

We ordered garlic bread and a trio of dips for entrees, a pasta dish, schnitzels and a chicken dish for mains. Three of the meals arrived after a long wait, and the last 5-10 minutes later. The entrees were forgotten and replaced with the promise of complimentary coffee.

While two of the dishes were fine- not great, but passable- the two supposed beef schnitzels were the subject of a long discussion regarding what type of meat it actually was. We eventually resolved it had to be pork or veal (because it certainly wasn't beef!). When we asked the waitress what she thought it was, she stated it was veal - and when we asked why, since we ordered beef, the remains were swiftly gathered up and word from the kitchen returned with assurance it was beef!

(1/10)Service

The service here was non existent. I am not sure if it was because we were there at an off peak time, but it certainly wasn't because they were busy, at less than 25% capacity.

It was a long wait for everything, from being seated (over 5 mins), ordering (30 mins), getting entrees (never), gaps between meals being served (mains arrived 5-10 mins apart), coffee order (30 mins), receiving drinks (20 mins average), and despite wait staff generally being around, they seemed to avoid eye contact with any of the patrons. Restless tables were noticeable all around, and we observed several arguments over the cash register.

From when we were (not) told about BYO status the wait staff were generally hostile and appeared to avoid interaction with guests.

Overall it was a very disappointing meal, both in terms of the food and service, and I would highly recommend people considering dining here do not!
